Meet Shannon Shelly

Questions:

Q: Tell us a little about your profession & why you do what you do:

A: I am the co-owner of Pixel Studios and Shelly Media. We are a rental photo, production and podcast studio space, as well as media production company. I studied Communications and Photography in college, then worked in television production for years. I took a detour for a while into the wine industry, raised my son, and then my partner (who also happens to be my husband) and I had the opportunity to purchase Pixel, which has been a perfect fit. My “why” is fairly simple, I love media and art in all its forms, and with this business, I get to help facilitate that. Having my own business means I can (attempt to) prioritize my family, and try to create the sort of environment that I’ve always wanted to work in where people come first, not profit.

Q: When not at work, where can we mostly find you?

A: My backyard, where I often work from anyway, staring at birds, or hiking around a swamp, also staring at birds.

Q: Where is your favorite place to dine in Charleston?

A: There are so many amazing places to eat here, but Bowen’s Island is my favorite.

Q: If you could lounge anywhere in the world, where would it be?

A: The Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island, GA. I’ve had the joy of staying there once, and it’s an amazing reset where you make zero decisions besides where to explore on the island that day.

Q: What does comfort mean to you?

A: Being with people who get me.

Q: If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

A: Read even more books. Make more pottery. Maybe learn to play the piano.

Q: What makes you feel most empowered?

A: Realizing that a lot of men in positions of power are a total waste of space, even though we as women have to work twice as hard. We got this.

Q: How do you recharge?

A: SLEEP.

Q: What makes you most uncomfortable?

A: The amount of people lately who don’t care about anyone but themselves, forget they live in a community, and have really latched on to the idea of individualism. Also, small talk.

Q: What’s one thing you would change about yourself?

A: Nothing, everything in our lives is a part of our journey, and the older you get the more you gain and learn!

Q: Any life hacks or secret talents we should know about?

A: Is overthinking things a secret talent?

Q: Favorite recipe we need to know about?

A: Whitney Otawka’s wood-fired oysters. Perfection.

Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

A: Nothing is real, we’re just on a rock hurtling through space. Make the best of it.

Q: What is your favorite thing to sleep in?

A: Sweatpants.

Q: What is your bucket list trip & why?

A: To hike the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal (even though I hate camping), to get out of my head. I’ve always wanted to see the Himalayas and visit the monasteries.

Q: What kind of driver are you?

A: I lived and drove in New York City for many, many years, if that’s any indication.

Q: What’s your secret weapon?

A: A dark sense of humor.
